Have You Heard The Latest MacBook Air Rumours?

Last updated in June 2013, Apple refreshed the MacBook Air yesterday. The refreshed models include the latest Intel i5 processors, AC wi-fi and faster flash storage.

All of the gossip to date has been about a new 12” Retina screen MacBook Air. The rumours centre around a design that is even thinner than the current MacBook Air and one that utlisies a fan less cooling system, button less trackpad and higher resolution Retina Display. It is though that if the display were to measure 11.88” it would allow Apple to offer the exact same PPI as the iPad Air, which is 264 PPI.

We aren’t expecting Apple to refresh its existing Retina range until the 3rd quarter of this year and that’s when we expect the 12” Air to be unveiled. However, we will keep you up to date with the developments on the current model as the week progresses.

The Latest iMac Rumours

Apple’s WWDC is scheduled for June this year and rumours are increasing that it will witness a new range of iMacs, including a new low-cost version.

Many now believe that the Mac Mini could be making way for the new low cost iMac. The Mac Mini is long overdue an update and this has given rise to the fact that people now feel that Apple may discontinue it.

Couple this with Apple’s desire to appeal to the Chinese and Asian markets and a low cost iMac could be the ideal product. So how much will it cost? Speculation suggests that it will be around the £950 mark which would place it in between the MacBook Air and the current entry level 21.5” iMac.

It is unlikely that the new iMacs will look different as they were only significantly redesigned in September 2012. The introduction of Intel’s Broadwell processor is likely to be included but delays here could force a launch back until the autumn.

We often get asked whether a Retina Display iMac will be produced. Whilst the screen resolution on the iMacs will be improved a true Retina Display is unlikely. The current resolution on the 27” iMac is 2,560 x 1,440 and to be a Retina is to would have to increase to 5,120 x 2,880. This would require a significant upgrade on the graphics capabilities and the cost of producing such a screen would be prohibitive.

The current 21.5 and 27” iMacs are our most popular models and we can deliver these within 2-3 days. If you require a new iMac call us on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost

How Many Cores Are Right For You?

When looking at computer specification the general assumption is more is best. However, it might not always be the case. If we take Apple’s new Mac Pro its standard off the shelf offerings are for a Quad Core or Six Core machine. Both processors are capable of hyper threading which means the Quad Core deals with 8 threads of data at once and the Hexacore 12.

Common sense suggests that this means the 6 Core is the better machine. However, it really depends on what type of software you are using. Many applications are Single Core programmes and have a limit to the number of threads of data that they are capable of spreading their workload across. Therefore, in this case the clock speed becomes more important and here the Quad Core 3.7GHz beats the 3.5GHz six core.

However, step up into the realms of 3D CAD and video editing software will undoubtedly benefit from the software being capable of spreading its workload across all of those six cores at once.  Also for those people who are extreme multi taskers running numerous programmes at once the six core will be the model to go for.

Another dilemma that faces many customers is whether to opt for the high end 27” i7 iMac or the entry level Mac Pro. In most tests the i7 iMac performs better in terms of processing but those Dual graphics cards shatter the iMacs single Nvidia Geforce option.

The new Mac Pro is available to lease from just £21.60 + VAT per week for the Quad Core and £28.60 + VAT per week for the Six Core.  If the new Mac Pro is of interest to you call us on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost

Windows XP And Microsoft’s Dilemma

On the 8th April 2014, Microsoft released its final security updates for Windows XP and Office 2003.  As security experts warned users that they could soon be prime targets for hackers if they do not abandon the products, the need to upgrade to more modern equipment has never been greater.

On the second Tuesday of each month Microsoft automatically rolls out new security updates, a date that has become known as “Patch Tuesday.”  This is also a day when they publish technical details on the security bugs they are fixing. The next Patch Tuesday is 13 May.

Security experts say they believe hackers will study that data and “reverse engineer” the May Patch Tuesday software updates to identify ways to attack computers running Windows XP, along with Office 2003, which will no longer receive patches from Microsoft.

This however leaves Microsoft will a real dilemma. Paying corporate customers, including the British Government are paying millions to get Microsoft to support Windows XP way beyond the deadline. The dilemma then is what they do with the vast number of consumer PCs that are vulnerable? To leave these to die whilst continuing to patch the PCs of paying corporate customers could be seen to be unfair.

Microsoft first warned that it was planning to end support for Windows XP in 2007, but security firms estimate that 15% to 25% of the world’s PCs still run on the version of the operating system that was first released in October 2001.

Undoubtedly, the best thing for any business to do is to upgrade to new machines that come pre-installed with either Windows 7/8 Professional. The thought of relying on Microsoft’s generosity to provide free security patches long after they have publicly stated that they will no longer be supporting XP would be risky at least.

If you are still running Windows XP and want to upgrade your system call us on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost

The biggest changes will include the A8 processor, Touch ID (fingerprint recognition) and a camera with a resolution of 8MP. Whilst it was initially thought that the iPad mini wouldn’t be touched this year it is believed that Apple want to boost sales and see these advancements as the perfect tool.

Regarding the Air, the belief is that we will see a launch date much earlier than last year’s November one.

How Much RAM Do You Need?

Does more memory mean better performance? Yes, but not as much as you might think.

Most budget PCs come with at least 4GB of RAM. More powerful models will come with 8GB whilst modern gaming machines will go as high as 16GB RAM. When you consider that Windows 8 Pro can support up to 512GB it begs the question do you have enough RAM and how much do you need?

We all assume that adding memory makes a PC significantly faster, and in some cases it does. Sticking an extra pair of RAM chips into a motherboard won’t change the speed at which the processor works, but it can help, since adding RAM reduces the need for Windows to rely on “virtual memory”.

Virtual memory is a file on your hard disk that serves as temporary storage when your PC’s “real” memory is full. Virtual memory makes it possible to have several heavyweight applications running at once, even if they won’t fit simultaneously in RAM. When you switch from one to another, Windows quickly swaps the relevant data from the disk into real memory, which explains why the virtual memory file is sometimes called a “swap file”.

However, with modern machines coming with multiple GBs of RAM, the need for Windows to swap between real and virtual memory is reduced. In fact tests have shown that when a modern PC runs several major applications at once the total RAM usage never topped 4GB. This means Windows didn’t need to fall back on virtual memory at any point, and indicates that installing more RAM would give only a modest speed boost.

So should avoid paying for more than 4GB?  If you make heavier demands on your system, you may well benefit from more memory than this. For example if you edit video files, or work on large databases, or simply have 20 tabs open in your web browser you would benefit from having more RAM.

For current tasks, however, adding memory beyond 4GB yields diminishing returns. Outside of extremely specialist data-processing tasks, it is unlikely that you will need the benefits from 16GB. Therefore, before you spend your money consider that 4 or even 8GB of RAM will do everything you need with ease and save you money in the long term.

New MacBook Rumours

The latest Apple rumours suggest that the MacBook range will be updated in September of this year. However, it is towards the smaller end of the range that is causing the most interest.

Early on this year rumours were rife that an iPad Pro was on its way with a 12” screen. However, last month these rumours were starting to be dispelled as it is thought that such a product would be incompatible with the existing iOS ecosystem.

So instead speculation is now turning to the MacBook Air. The latest rumours are suggesting a 12” MacBook Air with Retina Display will be hitting our shelves around September this year. It is thought that the new model would come without a fan assembly and feature a redesigned trackpad.

If the 12” model was to be produced it is unclear what Apple would do with the existing 11 and 13” MacBook Air’s. The obvious conclusion is that they would be scrapped allowing Apple to provide 12, 13 and 15” MacBook models with Retina Displays across the Air and MacBook Pro range.

If you are a fan of the existing MacBook Air or would like to speak to us about the Apple range please call 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost

Office For iPad Is Here

Last week the announcement that iPad users around the world have been waiting for, finally came. Office for iPad is finally here.

Microsoft has launched Word, Excel and Powerpoint onto the App Store and each of them has been optimised for touch-based controls. It was no surprise to see that within hours of the launch, Word became the most downloaded application for iPads in Apple’s app store. Excel and Powerpoint were the third and fourth most popular free app download.

This popularity shows just how much customers have been waiting for Microsoft’s signature Office products to arrive onto their iPads.

During recent times Microsoft has faced a lot of criticism for not offering the software until now. This move is seen to be driven by new CEO Satya Nadella and represents a change from Steve Ballmer who wanted Office to arrive on a Windows touch platform first.

Users wanting to only view and present documents can use Office for iPad without charge, but an Office 365 subscription is still needed to edit them. Small businesses are, however, offered a discounted annual rate of £39.60 per user for up to 25 workers.

Undoubtedly this move will be popular with businesses across the Midlands. With Office now available on the iPad contact us today to discuss our great deals on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost

The End Is Near For The MacBook Pro 13″

It has been a defiant little machine. However, the 13” non- Retina MacBook Pro looks like it may be removed from Apple’s product line later on this year. The entry level MacBook Pro was over looked for a hardware update last year and actually has not been updated since June 2012. However, it has remained the only MacBook with a DVD Superdrive that Apple offer.

As a result this model is still incredibly popular with people who have a real demand for using DVDs on a regular basis. Priced at just £8.95 + Vat per week on our flexi lease it comes with a full 3 years parts and labour warranty plus telephone and remote support.

Even with stiff competition from the entry level 13” MacBook Pro with Retina Display, priced at £9.80 + Vat per week, the older MacBook Pro has held its own.  Although, it can come as no surprise that its days are numbered since Apple has slowly been removing the Superdrive across its Mac range.

So if you are a fan of the Superdrive equipped 13” MacBook Pro, now is the time to snap up this great little model before it is cognised history.  Call us today on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost.

Windows XP Support Will End 8th April 2014

Support for Windows XP will end on 8th April 2014.  What does this mean? Technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC.

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

Originally launched in 2001, Windows XP is Microsoft’s most successful operating system. Vista failed to make people upgrade in 2005, essentially because many had just installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, and they didn’t have the cash or willingness to upgrade again.

Even Windows 7, which was released in 2009, has been a bit of a slow burner for Microsoft. However, the migration to Windows 7 is way behind schedule.

So what should you do? We would recommend that you run a full audit of every application in your desktop software portfolio. Understanding what software you utilise will allow you to decide on what upgrade path you can choose, Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Considering that Windows 8 has not been well received, we would recommend upgrading to Windows 7. Some might point out that mainstream support ends in January next year, but the OS will still be supported until 2020. 6 years is a long time and you are more likely to that your existing software works on Windows 7 rather than 8.

For a business running your IT on Windows XP is just too much of a risk and any work around are likely to be far more expensive than upgrading your machines. Talk to us today about whether your existing machines can be upgrade to Windows 7 or whether you need to utilise our affordable flexi-lease to bring in new equipment on 0121 285 0098, or email info@localhost

Time For An Office Tune Up

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has hinted that the company needs to take greater risks with its long-standing products. Windows and Office are two products that Microsoft created at the height of their powers and have been repeatedly tweaked and tuned up ever since.

Gates commented that “now, they need more than a tune-up. But that’s pretty exciting for the people inside who say. ‘We need to take a little more risk and do some new stuff’.” Whilst we could speculate what new stuff could be undoubtedly a touch-orientated version of Office for iOS would be a welcome and overdue addition to Microsoft’s range.

In the same interview Gates also hinted that Microsoft may no longer command the position of authority that it once had. Referring to the nineties when the organisation had so much money that they could pursue whatever ideas they wanted, he admitted that Google now held that position. He also admitted that Microsoft would have purchased WhatsApp but not for the $19 billion price that Facebook paid.

Originally, Microsoft had announced that new PCs preinstalled with Windows 7 would not be available after 31st October 2014. Guess What. The PC Still Exists

For a while now we have heard that the end is nigh for the humble desktop. The belief that tablets, such as the iPad would take over have been around ever since Apple started selling more iPads than Macs in 2011. At first glance headlines about Sony’s withdrawal from the PC market and HP not performing as well all lend credibility to the argument.

However, as I write this I am on a PC, in an office of PCs and Macs. Yes, iPads are around and we all have smart phones, but when it comes to doing work it is my PC that I turn to.  Our office is not alone. When we visit clients we are always met by groups of people working hard at a desktop. We have yet to walk into an office where everybody is on a tablet. At the moment it just isn’t happening.

There is no doubting that tablets are an important part of the mix. Even now, when we are on the 5th generation iPad, we still utilise them for any exhibitions we attend. They still have a wow factor about them. However, our two best selling machines are the HP ProDesk 400 and the 27” iMac. Both are desktop solutions and both are used as workhorses by the organisations that lease them.

So how do we account for the dip in PC sales? Is it that we are just finding room for a tablet solution? When tablets first hit the scene they were a brand new product, an innovation. People wanted to purchase them as they filled a void and were attractive products. However, it you look at the more established mobile phone market you will see that people buying a smartphone not to replace a PC or tablet but to simply replace a phone. So in years to come will people buy more tablets simply to replace their existing ones?

So as the market stabilises, having accommodated the tablet form, could it be that we have just witnessed a simple readdressing and are left with a market place whereby PC, tablets and Macs, all sit with one another. None of them are here to replace the other, simply to co-exist besides one another.

Until the tablet is able to make our everyday business tasks as easy to complete as there are on a PC or Mac, then we believe they are destined to be an important part of the mix but they will not replace them.  However, they will not replace the humble PC

Still Have Snow Leopard? You May Be At Risk

It might surprise you to learn that one in five Macs still runs on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, which is now over four years old. You may think that with Apple providing its latest OS X Mavericks for free, via the App Store, that this figure would be minimal. However, Snow Leopard was the last version of OS X that could run on Apple’s PowerPc processor.

If your business is still running Snow Leopard it is worth knowing that it has been left out of Apple’s last two security patches. Only last week a patch was issued for Mavericks, plus the previous two versions, Mountain Lion and Lion. However, Snow Leopard was ignored.  A similar situation arose in December last year when Apple updated Safari.

In fact the last time that Snow Leopard was patched was as long ago as September 2013. Now in fairness to Apple, they have supported Snow Leopard for longer than the traditional lifespan of an OS X release. Normally, support ends when the release becomes two versions behind the current OS.

Therefore, if you are still running Snow Leopard it is now time to upgrade your OS X to Mavericks and ensure the security of your system. Obviously, if your business is still running on a PowerPc, talk to us about our how flexi-lease can make bringing the latest Apple equipment into your business affordable. Regardless of whether you are a sole trader or major agency, if you operate a busy business the reality of failed Mac can cause huge disruption.  There is the downtime for the individual without a machine, the inconvenience of having to book a Genius Bar appointment 3-6 days from now, waiting 10 days for a repair and then finally going to collect the repaired Mac. However, we have gone a step further. Our bronze warranty, which is standard on many of our high end Macs, comes with a next day loan machine as standard. Should we ever have to take yours away for repair, we will supply you a loan Mac the very next day, allowing you to continue working uninterrupted until we can return your original machine fully repaired.

We’ve Got Some Mac Gossip!

One of the fascinating aspects of being fans and users of Apple products is trying to understand what future products the company has lined up. Whilst we have seen the Mac Pro hit our shores in recent months, the rest of the Mac line up is showing signs of age.

So what drives the upgrade path and what can we expect throughout 2014? A significant factor in Apple launching new Mac products is the availability of new processors from Intel.

If we start with the Mac Mini, a model that has not been upgraded since late 2012, the picture is somewhat unclear. Historically, the processors that go into the 13” MacBook Pros follow into the mini within a couple of months but this has not happened. Whilst rumours exist on the internet that a new Mac mini is imminent, there is nothing from a reliable source. Therefore, the future for this little powerhouse is very much unknown.

Moving onto the MacBook Air, this model uses the latest Haswell processors but at lower end of the scale. It is believed that Intel will launch a Haswell refresh in late 2014, which would be an obvious refresh point for the Air. Although, it is worth mentioning that the high end i7 processor upgrade path is not so clear at the moment.

However, the biggest rumour about the Air could be regarding a 12” Retina MacBook that could replace the existing MacBook Air line up.

For the MacBook Pro with Retina Display range, the general consensus seems to be that they too may get the upgraded Haswell chips towards the end of this year. Most commentators believe that Intel’s next generation chips, Broadwell, are lined up for the range but these have recently been delayed until 2015, meaning that the Haswell refresh will be important.

Our most popular model the iMac, is almost certainly going to get a Haswell refresh, with the current processors being replaced by a direct upgrade. One exception is on the low-end 21.5-inch iMac. This uses a special i5 processor, enhanced with Intel’s top-of-the-line Iris 5200 integrated graphics, to allow that machine to forego a discrete graphics chip. At present there has been no confirmation of plans for Intel to launch a corresponding i5-4590R chip as part of the Haswell refresh.

As for the Mac Pro the main issue is not about upgrading but getting a smooth flow of this popular new machine. New orders are currently shipping in April and many customers are keen to get their hands on Apple’s most powerful desktop ever.

So with Apple’s upgrade path directly linked to Intel’s it would appear that 2014 may be a relatively quiet year. On the other hand with Apple, constantly telling us that they are excited about the new and innovative products that they are working on perhaps they may just surprise us once again.

If you would like to discuss any of the current or future Mac line up feel free to call us on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost

Office For iPad. Sooner Rather Than Later

Last year we commented that Office for iPad would eventually be available, but not before Office had successfully been introduced on Microsoft’s touch platforms.

However, that all seems to be changing, as rumours are circulating that Office for iPad maybe with us by July 2014. Originally codenamed Gemini, Office for iPad is apparently ready for launch and it is thought that previous Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer agreed the pre-July launch.

If this were to be the case it would be a significant change in how Microsoft views the situation. Previously, their stance has been to protect Office and bring it to their own touch based solutions first. However, this move would seem them recognise that loyal Microsoft customers are likely to operate devices from other manufacturers. How many of us work religiously on a PC all day to go home and immediately turn on our iPads for example?

If Microsoft has had a change of heart we would welcome the change and the possibilities it would bring. It would also end the longest wait for software to reach a platform in recent technology history.

Leasing Is 100% Tax Efficient

Quite often potential new customers ask us what are the advantages of our offer compared to outright purchase. Our immediate response is to highlight the inclusive 3 year warranty and the cash flow benefits. For example, you can lease a new iMac, with 3 years hardware warranty plus telephone and remote support for just £10.30 + Vat per week. Compare this to having to take out over £1200 to buy the same product, and you can see that keeping the money in the business to spend on marketing and alike could make a real difference.

One of the key advantages that we often overlook when speaking to people, is that leasing is tax efficient. But what does that mean? Essentially, leasing is 100% tax-allowable. As the user you don’t actually own the equipment, the lease company does. This means that the lease payments to be written off the Profit & Loss account rather than the Balance Sheet, where a depreciating item is classed as a liability. Depending on the rate of tax you pay the saving of 20-40% of the cost of the lease repayments goes to you.

Each repayment is categorised as a lease rental and as such, is able to be written off as a business expense, thereby reducing the tax paid on your company’s profits. If you decide to buy your equipment outright, you are only allowed to write off a percentage of the total cost, meaning that you may pay more tax than if you had leased.

If you too would like to benefit from our 100% tax efficient equation call us 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost with your requirement.

Say Goodbye To The iPad 2

It was one of the most popular iPad models ever but it seems as if the end is in sight for the iPad 2. Apple is in the process of winding down production on the model, that was first introduced in early 2011. It has remained incredibly popular as a lower priced option even as newer models have been discontinued.

The reason for Apple’s decision is simply based on consumer demand. The iPad 2 has continued with strong sales particularly with educational institutions and other specialised markets.  Its lower price and compatibility with numerous accessories through the legacy 30-pin dock connector made it highly attractive.

However, with the introduction of the dramatically thinner iPad Air and Retina display-equipped iPad mini late last year, sales of the iPad 2 dropped dramatically and the company has apparently decided that continued production is not worthwhile. As of yet there is no word on when Apple will stop selling the iPad 2 but it is expected to be this year.

Sony Pulled Out Of The PC Market

Early this month came the announcement that Sony was pulling out of the PC market and selling off its Vaio computer division.

Citing a change in market and a desire to concentrate on its mobile product line-up of smartphones and tablets, there will no doubt be a huge number of loyal customers that will feel Apple’s main challenger has just been seen off.

For many Windows based users, Sony’s Vaio product line provided the attractiveness and sophistication that Apple customers take for granted. Their products seemed to be just that little bit better than a standard laptop.

It even seems that the late Steve Jobs was attracted by Sony. Former Sony President Kunitake Ando has stated recently that he was once met by Steve Jobs after a round of golf. The story goes that Steve Jobs was waiting for him, with a Sony laptop under his arm that was running the brand new Apple OS X software.

The belief is that whilst Apple shies away from working with other manufactures they were sufficiently impressed by Sony’s range of personal computers. It is a shame that we will lose the Vaio range and perhaps if Sony hadn’t dismissed Job’s offer perhaps things may have ended a little differently.

Welcome The iPad Air To Your Life

With over 170 million iPads sold since its launch in 2012, Apple’s iPad has changed the way we all do business.  There are now nearly half a million software Apps available for businesses.

So once you have established the need for the iPad in your business the big question is which one?

First of all there is size to consider. The new iPad Air is available in 16, 32, 64 or 128GB variations. We have found that whilst the iPads are bought for business reasons, a natural consequence of people using them is that they do get populated with personal photos, apps and alike. Therefore, the 32 and 64GB variations have proved to be the most popular and realistic.

The next big question is Wi-Fi or Cellular? The 32GB model the Wi-Fi version is just £4.95 + VAT per week and to add the cellular capability only adds an extra £1 + Vat per week.  So if cost is not a major consideration, then it really just comes down to your access to a Wi-Fi connection. If you are always on the move, or find yourself commuting by train, a strong case can be made for the cellular model. However, if you simply leave your Wi-Fi at home and drive to the office to connect to the network there you will probably be ok with just the Wi-Fi model.

Our iPad prices start at just £3.99 + VAT per week for the 16GB WI-Fi model and all models come with a 3 years parts and labour warranty and telephone and remote support. We also include a 3 years All Risks Insurance policy for complete piece of mind.

With discounts avaliable for multi purchase orders feel free to contact us at info@localhost or call 0121 772 592.

Windows 8 The New Vista?

With HP last week announcing in the US that it will now be providing its new PCs with Windows 7 and rumours that Microsoft employees refer to Windows 8 as the new Vista is the writing on the wall for Windows 8?

It’s no secret that consumers have been slow to adopt Windows 8, as well as Windows 8.1. Windows 7 remains dominant and even though it is 12 years old, Windows XP is much more popular than anything released since Windows 7.

While Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined to reach double digits in marketshare, Windows 8.1′s, which was released last October, currently stands at just 3.60. Considering that this is a completely free download for Windows 8 users this has to be considered low.  Further salt is rubbed into the wound when you consider that Windows 8.1 market share is still less popular that Windows Vista, despite the fact that Vista was despised by consumers as is 8 years old.

Many commentators feel that Microsoft has tried to be too clever and make an Operating System that works on both tablet and desktop PC. Windows 9 is rumoured for release next April and it is thought that this may herald a move away from a hybrid operating system to one whereby consumers will have two distinct interfaces for desktop and tablet use.

At GEEX most of our desktop PCs come with the option of either Windows 8 or Windows 7 Professional. So if you are a massive fan of Windows 8 or just love Windows 7 we have something for you. Feel free to contact us at info@localhost or call us on 0121 285 0098.

30 Years Of Apple

Just over 30 years ago, on the 22nd January 1984, Apple introduced the Mackintosh. It featured a 9 inch screen, a 3.5” Floppy Disk Drive and 128kb RAM!

The Mackintosh was launched at a time when IBM ruled the world of computing.  To put it into context the new iMac has a 1TB Hard Drive , the latest iPad Air has a 9.7” retina display and the new Mac Pro comes with 12GB RAM, that’s over 90,000 times as much memory as the first Mackintosh!

The greatest achievement of the Mackintosh was that it replaced the need to type in commands with point-and-click menus, introduced drag and drop, and launched the type of graphical user interface seen across PCs, phones, and tablets around the world today.

The video below provides a brilliant insight into how Apple has evolved over the past 30 years. If it inspires you, to get your hands on the latest Apple products, then check out our incredible lease prices here or call 0121 285 0098.

The End Of Windows XP

If you’re a Windows XP user, the 8th April 2014 will be a daunting date.  This is the date when Microsoft will no longer provide technical assistance for Windows XP, including automatic updates that help to protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on April 8th.

That means that if you are running Windows XP, and 30% of the world’s computers do, you are at risk from a security breach. So what are your options?

Firstly, you could of course keep running with XP and there are some signs that Microsoft will continue to push the Malicious Software Removal Tool to XP machines until July 2015, providing some level of protection to its users.

Secondly, you can upgrade to the latest operating system Windows 8.1. However, there is no inexpensive way to do this and Windows 8 is potentially becoming the new Vista.

The third option, is that you could lease a brand new HP ProDesk 400 Desktop PC from GEEX, that’s runs Windows 7, from as little as £5.50 + Vat per week.  This new desktop machine from HP offers the latest Intel processors and integrated graphics. Along with 8GB RAM and a 500GB Hard Drive it is the perfect office workhorse.

So if your company is still running Windows XP and you need to upgrade your computer equipment feel free to contact us at info@localhost or call us on 0121 285 0098.

Why Should Schools Lease?

Why should schools lease?
Schools will lease for a number of reasons. The main two are to update equipment regularly and to assist with cash flow. For example, yearly budgets may not be sufficient to purchase equipment outright.

What options can you offer my School?
We currently deal with 2 enquiries and as Apple iPad specialist, they mainly revolve around two scenarios.

The first is where the school pays for the lease and they are looking to equip a mobile classroom.  A typical example would be us supplying 30 or so Apple iPads, complete with a syncing trolley, a Mac Mini to configure the iPads plus a GEEX specialist to train your ICT technician. This is then put on a operating lease with a 3 year warranty and insurance for around £375 + vat per month for the package.

The second is where schools can provide iPads for all utilising a parental contribution.  We offer an iPad for Student scheme, which is cost neutral to the school, light on administration but allows you to put a brand new iPad Air in a student’s hand for only £13 a month.

Is it more than buying?
NO. An operating lease offers better value and a cheaper repayment by up to 20% than purchasing directly from a supplier.

What sort of lease should I have?
There are now some very clear guidelines on this. You may be offered two types of leases, GEEX only offer a legally compliant Operating Lease. As part of this the school rents the equipment and has no ownership rights at the end. DfE guidelines state:

“An Operating Lease is the only type of lease a School should enter into. These leases involve the School paying a rental fee for the hire of an asset for a period of time, and similar to a rental agreement. No other types of lease, such as a Finance lease or Hire purchase, may be entered into by the School as this is a form of borrowing” (Buy Goods Service section of Departments website).

However some lease companies and other computer suppliers may offer you a finance lease. These are illegal for a school to commit to, the current DfE guideline states:

“All LA-maintained schools are expressly forbidden from entering into any form of Finance Lease without approval of the Secretary of State for Education. This constitutes borrowing and is prohibited under section 3.9 of the LA Scheme for Financing Schools (June 2009).” (Leicester Country Council)

“Finance leases are borrowing, which is therefore illegal unless the Secretary of State has given written permission.” (Hertfordshire County Council)

What if I drop it?
We include insurance in our leases covering against accidental damage, loss or theft. In these instances we may require an explanation and picture but a machine is normally repaired or replaced within 48 hours. Please check your quote to ensure insurance is included.

What happens at the end of the agreement?
Your school has the option to either return the equipment at the end of the lease term or if you are still using the equipment you can opt to extend the rental period by up to 12 months at a reduced rental cost. Remember under DfE guides you are in an Operating leases which acts as a pure rental not a loan.

On the 1:1 Parental Contribution Scheme the school can take ownership of the iPad. The School will make a payment on their behalf, at fair market value, and transfer ownership to them.

Key Benefits

  1. Offer better value for money than Local Government funding rates or other borrowings, as less than 90% of the equipment cost is financed
  2. Match lease term to use of the equipment, i.e. no long-term loans to pay for equipment used over the short term
  3. Allow the user to create leasing profiles matched to budgets i.e. annual, quarterly, monthly or by term
  4. Comply, where applicable, with Local Education Authority guidelines on lease tests
  5. Encourage the discipline of keeping a modern ICT infrastructure to ensure your school keeps pace with continuing technological advancements
  6. Aid Schools in acquiring the ICT they need as opposed to ICT they can afford
  7. Maintains your devolved formula capital as the monthly payments can be treated

For more information about leasing for your school, give our schools specialist, James, a call at GEEX on 0121 285 0098 or email, james@GEEX.co.uk

The 4K Revolution

Last month we touched on the subject of 4K displays and with Apple launching the new Mac Pro we are seeing 3rd party manufactures releasing their own 4K displays.

Interestingly, and despite all the rumours, it looks as if Apple won’t be producing their own 4K display. On their website and Mac Pro imagery they are using a Sharp IGZO 4k display and we will discuss this more shortly.

With the capability of running 3, simultaneous 4K displays, Apple claim that the new Mac Pro will allow you to work pixel-for-pixel in 4K without slowing down. This is down to its combination of AMD FirePro workstation-class graphics and the latest Xeon E5 processors.

However, not all 4K monitors are compatible with the Mac Pro. Eizo’s offering only supports Windows and DisplayPort. Dell however, will have two offerings lined up for the Mac Pro.  An Ultrasharp 24” (UP2414Q) and an Ultrasharp  32” (UP3214Q) model. They will be running the Ultra HD resolution 3840 x 2160 (as opposed to the Cinema 4K standard of 4096 x 2160) with the ability to connect via Mini DisplayPort or HDMI. The screens also have USB thrown in as well as a card reader on the 32” option. The 24” will cost £14.50 + VAT per week, with the 32” adding £22.90+VAT per week to a business lease.

The Sharp IGZO PN-K321H offering is again a 32” Ultra HD option is more expensive but it does include an impressive 6 hour response, three years business warranty, pricing is £31.80+VAT per week on our lease option.

The Apple Mac Pro will be available from launch starting at £21.60 plus VAT per week on a three years GEEX Flexi lease.  That lease price includes an Apple keyboard and mouse and our free 500GB Cloud Backup. Deliveries start later this month so please call 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost if you have any queries.

Don’t Let Money Hold Your Business Back In 2014

Need new computers but don’t have the money? Consider leasing.

Many of us return to work in the New Year, determined to make this our year. Bringing in new IT to increase efficiencies, or as a source of competitive advantage, makes perfect sense. However, finding the money to do this is something completely different. We don’t want your plans to be derailed at the first hurdle so let our equation help your business grow in 2014.

Leasing your new PCs, laptops and Apple Mac computers will instantly remove the financial burden. Regardless of whether you need new laptops, or a fully fledged network installation, our lease allows you to reap the benefits of the new equipment from day 1, without having to pay the full upfront cost. Need new iPads for your sales team? No problem they start from as little as £4 + Vat per week with an all risks insurance policy. Laptops start from as a little as £3 + Vat and desktop computers from £5 + Vat per week.

Extra piece of mind comes with the fact that all of our leases come with a full 3 years parts and labour hardware warranty, plus telephone and remote support. What’s more we will also offer you a renewal option after 2 years on our Apple leases and 18 months on our PC ones. We will give you brand new equipment, at a similar weekly price, in return for you entering a new 3 year agreement. What’s more the first lease will be settled and you get to keep the original equipment. So for a similar weekly cost your business will now have double the amount of equipment at its disposal.

So don’t let a simple thing like money prevent you from achieving your ambitions for 2014. Contact us today on 0121 285 0098 or email info@localhost and let us help make your plans a reality.

Part Exchange For A Mac Pro

It’s been a little over a year since we introduced our Apple Mac part exchange programme. The scheme works exactly like part exchanging your old car at your local showroom. We will give you a price for the old machine and this directly reduces your repayments on the new one.

This month sees the Apple’s New Mac Pro arrive. This new model is proving extremely popular and we have a number of clients who have already placed orders with us.  The off the shelf packages that we offer are:

  • Quad Core 3.7GHz, Free upgrade to 16GB RAM, Dual AMD D300 2GB Graphics, 256GB Flash Storage, Apple Wired Keyboard, Magic Mouse, OS X Mavericks – £21.80 + VAT per week on a 3 year flexible lease.
  • Six Core 3.5GHz, 16GB RAM, Dual AMD D500 3GB Graphics, 256GB Flash Storage ,Apple Wired keyboard, Magic Mouse  OS X Mavericks – £28.60 + VAT per week on  3 year flexible lease.

Whilst our equation makes this new model more affordable than ever, we wanted to extend our part exchange programme to include previous generations of the Mac Pro.

For example, a Quad Core, 3.0GHz, original Mac Pro from August 2006, can be traded in and take off £1.95 of the weekly lease cost of the brand new Apple Mac Pro. If you have a newer model, for example, Six Core 3.33Ghz from July 2010 then you can send it back to us, take a new lease on the new 2013 Apple Mac Pro and reduce the weekly lease cost by £4.50 per week. In total that is £702 plus VAT (£842.40 inc VAT).

We appreciate that your old Mac may be a few years old and that it may have general wear and tear. However, as long as it is in working condition, we can accept it no problem at all

So, if you have an old Apple Mac, sitting in the corner, collecting dust, please contact us on 0121 285 0098 or email birmingham@GEEX.co.uk and let us make that new Mac more affordable than ever.

Lease Now, Pay April 2014!

Christmas maybe over but here at GEEX we want to extend the festive spirit and therefore, we are offering customers the opportunity to defer their first lease payment, on any new deal, until 1st April 2014!

So how does it work?  You simply choose the computers that you wish to lease and we will deliver them as soon as possible. However, instead of making an immediate payment you don’t start paying until April 2014. The only requirement is that you make quarterly repayments throughout the lease rather than our traditional monthly repayment. This means just 4 payments per year, in return for having a 3 month window before you have to start paying.

Even if you defer your payments you can still take full advantage of our flexi-lease benefits. After two years, or 8 quarterly payments, you will be given the option to renew the lease. We will offer you brand new equipment (does not have to be like-for-like) and give you the option to RETURN or RETAIN your existing equipment. All lease agreements are subject to a simple credit check. To undertake the Lease now, pay April offer your business must have been trading for a minimum of 2 years and all offers are subject to status.

Give us a call here at GEEX on 0121 285 0098 for information on lease now, pay April.
